99% of companies are running their remote work programs WRONG.
Here's why (and how they should change it):
1. Most companies don't DO the things that make remote work work.
- They NEED to hold quarterly in-person, all-hands events.
- They NEED to over-communicate and have cameras on for all meetings.
- They NEED to support employee meetups and provide a budget for them.
2. Employees and employers misinterpret what a remote environment requires.
- It requires MORE synchronous video calls.
- It requires specific video-first tech and workflows (Slack is the WORST).
- It requires investment in company-wide mindfulness-based stress reduction programs. It's stressful.
3. Remote requires asynchronous WORK, not async feedback and AD-HOC interaction.
- This includes rules for file naming, video messaging → YES, Slack messages → NO.
- They need to be explicit about when they are expected to be available and when they aren't.
- No “green dots” on Slack. They promote a culture of fear and anxiety.
TAKEAWAY
Most remote work programs lead to:
- Massive turnover
- Poor productivity
- Poor execution
- Stressful working environments
And the worst part is...
Most founders/employers point to these as reasons remote work doesn't work.
But the truth is...
Remote work DOES work.
If they do it right.
